Why are prepaid cards an option now?
Several years ago, at the time EFT was being implemented, prepaid cards were reviewed. The programs were more expensive and difficult to implement. Cards are now commonly used for payroll services, as well as state and healthcare benefit programs. Banking networks and procedures are now well established. Merchant acceptance of Debit and Prepaid cards is now widespread. Most importantly, consumers are now quite comfortable with Debit & Prepaid cards.
How does InsurCard differ from a traditional bank account debit card?
Traditional debit cards are linked to a checking account. In addition to accessing funds in these traditional accounts by card, funds may also be accessed by writing checks. Furthermore, funds may be added to these accounts by the account owner. The InsurCard Prepaid card is different. Only the insurance company may add funds to the prepaid card account. The only way to access the funds is via the card. The InsurCard Prepaid card is also different from traditional prepaid cards, such as transportation cards, or store gift cards. Many of these prepaid cards actually have their value stored on the magnetic strip on the card itself, and if they are lost or stolen, there is no way to recover the funds. The cash value of the InsurCard Prepaid card, however, is kept on the Bank’s processing systems and if the card is lost or stolen, the funds can be restored to the cardholder.
Does the insurer need to change their existing banking relationship, or add another banking partner?
No. There is no need to change your existing banking relationship. Money to fund the cards is drawn from a pre-designated account at the financial institution of your choosing.
